Aruna (she feels like a friend) writes with a straightforward tone that somehow comes across as companionable in some ways, distant in others, but always welcoming. Reading “Look! My New Book,” you feel as if you are sitting next to her, savoring the moment, cracking the spine of a brand new book with her name on it! Aruna’s sass comes out in “Being Myself,” an ode to the high schooler we all wish we had been. Such confidence!
Having lost my father many years ago, “My Father’s Eyes” brings back memories and surprisingly welcome tears. Aruna’s words delve through your heart with a melody that is so familiar, yet so refreshing. “Aruna in Wonderland” encourages the traveler to do more than just see the sights and snap the vistas.
Overall, Spark does just that. It will spark an interest in the unique poetry that Aruna Gurumurthy brings to the scene: poetry full of depth, honesty, and emotion. Her poetry is at times picturesque, at times heart-rending, and yes, a little sassy! But—and this is what we need today—the poetry of Aruna is always thought-provoking.
